i was so excited to get invited to teach a children's workshop at the
the thing that sealed the deal (because I'd rather take the summer
off from teaching) was that they would hang my artwork
with the other workshop artists.
it's really difficult to get your artwork into this museum.
they show contemporary artists from around the world
and i always have admired much of what is shown in it.
my students do a docent program there every year
and i wish they could see my elephant on the wall!
i don't make art in order to have it shown - i make art
just because i have to. but it's icing on the cake when
the public can view it.
during the workshop (for 4-6 year olds) we focused on making characters
out of paper. they had the option to make them 3D or flat...
having in mind that everyone has a story (or two) to tell, in our
next (and last) session we will make a backdrop so that
we can act out the story with our characters for the parents at the end.
it was a small class of 8 children and they were all amazing artists.
this was alexa and her dog...
this was dotty and her backpack is filled with food.
this was mine - hearty - the alien
it was just so cool to see this hanging on a white gallery wall.
it's been a long time since i've had an exhibit...
2 years in the making - one of my favorite things i have ever created.
yay:)
today was the easiest teaching day i've ever had. two hours with a
snack and play time in between. kids getting lost in the creative
mode - no assessing (although we had show and tell time at the end)
no mastering materials... no comments to write...
effortless.
i need to take some of this with me in sept. when school
starts up again.
but until then... it's making art and enjoying freedom.

How wonderful for you! And how wonderful for the children that you taught to be in the presence of an artist that really does it "just because she has to". That is really the epitome to me. Artists that do it for the money...a dime a dozen. I think that all art should be affordable and that all people should be able to be exposed to it. It helps in so many different aspects of a person's life. Integral.
thank you teri!
yes, affordable and accessible...
a lot of the art that is shown at that place isn't, but the great part about it is that it does an incredible job of connecting living artists with people. their educational programs for children and adults are phenomenal. to get all caught up in doing it for money or the business of the art world isn't really for me, so i stay on the outer edges and sell at my studio, at local venues and on etsy:) (not that making money from making art is all bad - it's just the intention that you have i guess...)
peace,
jennifer
So wonderful for you and the kids-it sounds like you all had a blast! Congratulations on getting your work hung, too! That elephant piece is my favorite; any prints available yet?
hey sharmon,
thank you:) no prints yet...
just not sure how to go about doing them. i've found good places on the internet, but just don't have the time or energy right now. maybe someday:)
love,
