someone recently asked me what my process was
for creating layers in my paintings, so i decided to
document my latest one...
(quote by Aesop)
(quote by Aesop)
i start with one flat color (or a couple with a texture, this
one just has the light green)
then i take my hand carved stamps and make one layer
of a darker or lighter color - in this case, a darker shade of green
then i paint another shade or color around the stamps
after that dries, i stamp one more pattern in a contrasting color,
i chose dark blue because of the colors in the peacock:)
the last layer of pattern is usually painting a darker version of the
blue carefully around the peacock (it's hard to see, but i used one
more layer of dark blue so that behind the peacock stamp
is still that first layer of blue with the texture from the brush)
i end with words or a ghostly image (of a symbol, animal or words)
that is glazed on with cut down
that is glazed on with cut down
paint so you can see all of the layers.
see this elephant
in this case, it was hard to read the words,
so i added an opaque layer of yellow/green.

i used the same color scheme because that's what
was on my table, and blue green is in my mind lately...
hope you enjoyed my little tutorial:)

Hi! I love seeing your process; your handmade stamps are gorgeous. A few nosy questions if you don't mind: What kind of paint are you using, and do you also use it for the stamps? What do you mean by a "ghostly"? And most importantly, where can I get a print of the piece on your new header? I would love to have a print of the elephant on your old header as well. They're both fantastic!
namaste, Sharmon
hey sharmon!
acrylic paint, mostly golden, windsor newton or liquitex from the tube.
yes, i use it for the stamps too, with a wide somewhat soft brush - the cheap ones from the hardware store are my favorite!
not sure about the prints of my work... that is something i have been thinking about for a long time... but haven't researched it yet to see if it is feasible...
thanks for your comment!

ps. by ghost image, i usually paint a white image on top of the layers as in my big word paintings or this elephant http://reminders2bepresent.blogspot.com/2011/01/productive.html
that's just what i've been up to lately... it's like i've seen these things before and they stay with my in my memory - if that makes any sense...?
Thank you so much for sharing this via the comments! I absolutely LOVED seeing your process! Humbled, that my photo (& mama) inspired such a beautiful piece of art! xoxox Big Love to you!
