beautiful rakhis

these are rakhis made by my friend swati.

i met her on my most recent trip to india in delhi

and she is a sweetheart.

rakhis are part of a tradition for the festival 

called raksha bandhan (which means, "bond of protection")

during this festival, sisters tie these onto their brother's arms
(or other males who are close to the family or are friends)

in return, the brother promises to protect his sister.

what a sweet celebration....
