diwali

the hindu holiday called diwali (divali, deepavali) is
coming up on november 5th... (lasts for 5 days)
trying to figure out how i am going to celebrate it.
i would love to do it with other people...
and of course with fire, candles, song and sweets.
there are many things to celebrate...
my favorite being 'the awareness of one's inner light'
why do these holidays speak to my soul more
than the ones i was brought up with?
not sure, but i am happy to find some
traditions that are meaningful to me, even if
i am not hindu or indian.
This all came up because my friend Swati from Delhi
gmail chatted me and she was making things for the holiday.
it was so awesome to see her fold art cards, clay oil lamps
decorated discs and her worship space.
stay tuned to see how i will find a way to
celebrate!

Interestingly enough, I'll be attending kirtans on the night before and the night after the 5 day Diwali holiday (Wah at Prakasa and Dave Russell at Kripalu). But I want to do something else too, even if it's as simple as lighting candles every night and learning to make one of the Indian sweets in my cookbooks and sharing them...

thanks all - i wish i could just join someone's celebration to learn how to do my own, but like everything else, i guess i just have to figure it out and see what feels right for me. i think it will involve a fire pit if it's nice out... and definitely some sweets - maybe a trip to the indian market... and hopefully a few friends. i'll keep you posted! found that photo on the internet, it's so beautiful...

Hey Jennifer,
came across this article, Create Your Own Holy Day, when I received the magazine Spirituality & Health in the mail today, which made me think of you when I saw this post! Gorgeous photo. Makes sense to me that that your finding this new way of celebrating (which seems love and spirit honoring based)is more appealing than the old ways (which can often feel consumerism based, in our western society...) Blessings to you in what ever you choose to create for yourself - I'm sure it will be beautiful. love, Karin
